DEFINITION

Generative engine optimization (GEO)

A broad name for improving how a brand or source is represented in responses produced by generative search and AI systems.

Reviewed August 28, 2026

GEO is commonly used alongside AEO and AI visibility. The labels are not governed by one universal standard, so a useful program defines the exact outcomes it measures rather than relying on the acronym alone.

What the work includes

Typical work spans question research, source content, claim support, entity consistency, technical accessibility, third-party corroboration, and observation of generated answers.

What it cannot promise

No publisher controls an independent model’s response. A responsible program can promise the work it delivers and report what it observes, but it should not describe a possible citation as guaranteed inventory.
